I went to the chittendent family and district courthouse today, Tuesday, because I thought they had changed their furlough days to half day Thursdays and closed all day Fridays, but I was wrong--they are also closed on Tuesdays. So that means the courts are only open 2.5 days out of the week. This was done to "save money," but there is no way this saves money--it just makes the wheels of justice turn slower than death so that it's more discouraging to people already trapped inside the system.
Say, hypothetically speaking, 10 people get arrested on Monday night, or Thursday afternoon, right before furlough Tuesday, or furlough Thursday and Friday, then they would have all that longer to wait in booking for an arraignment which might release them on bail and/or conditions. There is no way this saves money, and the cases still have to be heard at some point in time, using the same amount of money in the future, but instead, we've also used money keeping them in jail rather than making sure as many cases could get through the system in a week as possible. 2.5 days of being open is not enough, and it will just back up the system, and I can guarantee you, it has more than likely cost you more, not saved you a single cent.
Think about it.
